Sun. Nov 21 USA to Rome
Depart USA airports for your overnight flight into Rome, Italy, for your week long vacation!
Mon. Nov 22 Rome
Upon arrival in Rome make your way to our hotel, get settled in and this afternoon (approx 2pm) meet your Tour Guide at your hotel for introduction. The balance of the day is at leisure to start exploring this exciting city!
Rome, (“the city of the seven hills”) is thoroughly modern and cosmopolitan and is one of the major European cities that escaped WWII relatively unscathed, so central Rome remains essentially Renaissance and Baroque in character. The Historic Centre of Rome is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Dinner is at leisure with some of your fellow travel companions to experience the local restaurants.
Tues. Nov 23 Rome
Today we have a half day guided tour of the Vatican, including entrance to the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St Peter’s Basilica. The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo, is one of the most renowned artworks of the High Renaissance and the beautiful St. Peter’s Basilica is the most prominent building, with its dome, inside the Vatican City.
Vatican City, officially State of the Vatican, is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome. It is the smallest independent nation in the world and it is the pope’s official residence.
This afternoon is free at leisure to explore the things you want to see! (B)
Wed. Nov 24 Rome to Sorrento via Pompeii
We depart early for Sorrento stopping at the famous ruins at Pompeii- a partially buried Roman town destroyed and completely buried during an eruption of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD. It was discovered in 1592 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After you settle into our hotel in Sorrento, start exploring and enjoying this fascinating city. Your guide is on hand to assist with getting you acclimated to the area. Enjoy dinner on your own tonight with friends from the group. (B)
Thurs. Nov 25 Sorrento – Amalfi Coast
Today is a full day to enjoy our guided drive on one of the most famous and beautiful coastal areas in the world –the Amalfi Coast-with views of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The Amalfi Drive (connecting Sorrento and Amalfi) is the narrow road that threads around the high cliffs above the Mediterranean. Renowned for its rugged terrain, scenic beauty, picturesque towns and diversity, the Amalfi Coast is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
We visit the town of Amalfi-surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery and Ravello- one of the most attractive destinations on the Amalfi Coast. It is a peaceful historic village popular with tourists and famous for its views and gardens. It perches high above Amalfi overlooking the Mediterranean and has been a destination for artists, musicians, and writers.
Positano, the most vertically scenic of the villages along the coast, went from an artist’s colony and poor fishing village to upscale resort. The main part sits in an enclave in the hills leading down to the coast. Tourism is the major industry, especially since the 1950’s after after John Steinbeck’s published his essay about Positano in Harpers Bazaar in May, 1953.
Late afternoon we return to Sorrento. Dinner is at leisure to enjoy some Italian cuisine and wine with friends! (B)
Fri. Nov 26 Sorrento at Leisure
Today is a full day at leisure to explore Sorrento and area! Below are some ideas and your guide will be on hand to give suggestions and assistance. Explore, hike, shop…it’s your free day to see this beautiful area up close, so make sure you research what you want to see! Things to do in and around Sorrento:
Take a ferry or hydrofoil to the famous Isle of Capri- a breathtaking area of natural beauty in the Bay of Naples. In Sorrento visit--Chiesa di San Francisco-this 14th Century Monastery features a fine cloister with arches and gardens set in the midst of the busy resort town;--Museo Correale di Terranova- has ancient sculpture and antiques housed in a former palace. A highlight is the local art of intarsia, using wood to make thin, nearly flat figurines;--Duomo (Cathedral of Sorrento)- inside has beautiful ceilings and altar;--Marina Grande- behind here is a typical fishing village, represented by a fusion between Moorish architecture and the local styles;--Museobottega della Tarsialignea (The museum/workshop of inlaid wood) -located in an eighteenth century palace in a room with frescoed vaults and hand painted wallpaper on its ceilings, it has a selected and rich collection of furniture and objects made by the inlayer masters of Sorrento since the 19th century.
After your full day of exploration of the area, dinner is at leisure to enjoy your last night in Sorrento! (B)
Sat. Nov 27 Sorrento – Rome with afternoon at Leisure in Rome
Today we travel back to Rome and will have a chance to enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure in Rome. Maybe take an optional tour with others from the group or maybe visit The Colosseum and Pantheon or stoll through the historical center and see the Trevi Fountain or visit the Piazza Navona-where the Fountain of the Rivers and the Fountain of the Moor are both by Bernini. It’s a great area for people watching and enjoying lunch or dinner. Visit or sit and people watch at the most famous Spanish Steps which lead up to the Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti.
Rome is also a great place for shopping with designer outlets and department stores all over the city. Do some shopping near the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps) and on famous Via Dei Condotti. This area is one of the richest streets in Italy and one of the best streets for shopping and people-watching in Rome.
Dinner is at leisure-a farewell dinner can be arranged for our last night in Italy! (B)
Sun. Nov 28 Depart Rome for the Home
Yes, it really is time to go home! Say good-bye to new friends! Your homebound flight arrives the same day. (B)
Don’t Forget to Toss a Coin in the Trevi Fountain…………
The water at the bottom of the fountain represents the sea. Legend has it you will return to Rome if you throw a coin into the water. You should toss it over your left shoulder with your back to the fountain.
